Important Update: Mandatory e-KYC Verification for All .IN Domain Registrants

Mandatory e-KYC for .IN Domains

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has announced a critical policy update affecting every individual and business owning a .IN domain. In a move to bolster the security and credibility of India’s national digital space, e-KYC verification is now mandatory for all new domain registrations and renewals.

Effective Date: December 5, 2025

At Bluechip Techno Solution, we are dedicated to ensuring your online presence remains uninterrupted. Here is a breakdown of the new regulations and the steps you need to take immediately.

🔍 What Is Changing?

1. Mandatory e-KYC for All Registrants

The era of anonymous registrations is over. Every registrant—whether an individual or a business—must complete a digital Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification process. This applies to:

  • New domain purchases.

  • Existing domain renewals.

  • Updates to registrant contact information.

2. Restrictions on Foreign Registrants

Under the new policy, .IN domains are primarily reserved for entities based in India.

  • Indian Registrants: Standard e-KYC applies.

  • Foreign Registrants: You must demonstrate a valid legal or business nexus with India (e.g., trademarks, local office presence). Without this proof, foreign entities will be barred from registering or maintaining .IN domains.

3. “ServerHold” Risk for Non-Compliance

This is the most critical aspect: Any domain that fails to complete the verification within the stipulated timeframe will be placed on SERVERHOLD status.

  • Consequence: Your website and emails connected to the domain will stop functioning immediately until the KYC is approved.

📄 Required Documents for Verification

To complete the e-KYC process, you must provide valid government-issued identification. Accepted documents include:

  • For Individuals:

    • Aadhaar Card

    • Passport

    • Driving License

    • Voter ID

  • For Businesses/Organizations:

    • Registered business incorporation documents (GST, MSME, or Incorporation Certificate).

Note: Specific details on the submission portal will be shared with you shortly.

🛡️ Why Is This Important?

While this adds a step to the registration process, it is a positive move for the Indian digital ecosystem:

  • Prevents Misuse: drastically reduces cyber fraud and phishing using .IN domains.

  • National Security: Protects India’s digital identity.

  • Trust: Ensures that visitors know a .IN site is owned by a verified, authentic entity.

✅ Action Plan: What You Should Do Now

Don’t wait until your renewal date. Take these steps to ensure continuity:

  1. Check Your Data: Ensure your current domain contact information (email and phone) is accurate.

  2. Prepare Documents: Have your Aadhaar, Passport, or Business Registration files scanned and ready.

  3. Inform Clients: If you are a reseller or manage domains for others, notify them of this mandatory requirement immediately.

  4. Review Foreign Domains: If you hold domains for foreign entities, begin planning for proof of local nexus or transfer arrangements immediately.
